Living in Selaiyur
Selaiyur is an East Tambaram neighbourhood about 22 km south of the city centre, built around Camp Road and the Madras Christian College campus, which has been here since 1937 and still sets the tone of the place. Since November 2021 it has been part of Tambaram City Municipal Corporation rather than Chennai's, which is a detail with real consequences for water, tax and approvals. Sites are larger than in the city, so projects here run to mid-size blocks rather than single buildings.
Transport runs on road and rail rather than metro. Tambaram station is about 4.4 km west, on the Beach–Chengalpattu line, and carries both suburban EMUs and main-line trains. There is no metro station here and none under construction — the nearest planned stops, at Medavakkam Junction and Perumbakkam, are on a corridor still being built to the east. The main corridor through the area is the Tambaram–Velachery Road, renamed Major Mukund Varadarajan Salai in June 2026, with Camp Road Junction the local interchange; MTC routes 51, 51A, 95, 99, 99A and 105 serve it, and share autos fill the gaps. GST Road and the Outer Ring Road are both close.
Most people here commute: Guindy is about 12 km, Taramani and Tidel Park around 13 km, and SIPCOT Siruseri roughly 15 km across via Medavakkam. Locally, the Tambaram and Chromepet education, hospital and defence establishments are the main employers, with the Air Force station adjoining.
Water needs care, and the reason is the change of local body. Selaiyur is supplied by Tambaram Corporation, not CMWSSB, and the Corporation's own description of its system is intermittent supply with inadequate per-capita availability and low pressure. A planned 24x7 scheme covers six areas in its first phase — Sembakkam, Madambakkam, Chitlapakkam, Tiruneermalai, Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai — and Selaiyur is not among them. Sewerage is partial: Tambaram reports underground drainage in only 19 of its 70 wards, with house connections done for roughly 41% of properties, and UGD works were still under way in Selaiyur as of mid-2025. Assume septic tank unless the specific street is connected and someone can show you.
On flooding, the Corporation has done something unusually useful: it published a flood-vulnerability list in October 2024 naming 32 locations across its five zones, and for Zone 5 it identifies surplus water from Thangal Eri and Selaiyur Eri as the cause of flooding at eleven places, including Kannappar Street, Arul Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Adhi Nagar, Ricky Garden and Gandhi Nagar. That is the list to read before choosing a street. Selaiyur itself was not named in reports of the 2015 floods or Cyclone Michaung — Tambaram as a whole was, in both — but it has waterlogged repeatedly in ordinary rain since, including November 2024 and August 2025, and in July 2025 sewage-mixed water stood on the main road in front of the police station after cable-laying blocked a pipeline.
Schools are a draw: Madras Christian College adjoins on about 320 acres, with two Kendriya Vidyalayas, Alwin Memorial and Shree Gugans in the area. Be Well and Mani's are the local hospitals, with Hindu Mission on GST Road at Tambaram the nearest large one.
What to check here before you buy: whether your street appears on Tambaram Corporation's flood-vulnerability list, and where it sits relative to Selaiyur Eri and Thangal Eri; whether the street has the underground sewer yet or is still on septic; how water is actually supplied and how often; and the CMDA approval, since the planning authority here is still CMDA even though the local body is Tambaram.
What it is not: the civic services here are a municipal corporation's, not Chennai's, and they are visibly behind. If you expect Greater Chennai Corporation standards because the address says Chennai 600073, you will be disappointed.
